Bizarre Beauty Rituals | Painted Nylon Stockings | Exovex
For centuries, stockings were the apparel of choice for royalty. From King Charles IX to Queen Elizabeth I, kings and queens wore hosiery.
While hosiery previously was meant to be hidden under dresses and skirts, by the 1920s dresses and skirts became shorter and women flaunted their fishnet and embellished stockings
In 1941, Britain introduced clothes rationing to conserve resources which meant that the beloved nylon stockings were one of the first to go.
In response, many women resorted to painting on their stockings.
Gravy brownings were a popular paint and some women even drew in a seam with an eyebrow pencil to make it more realistic.
