The Irish Arts and Crafts Movement was an astonishing flowering of creativity in arts and crafts in Ireland from the 1890s to the 1920s, emerging and thriving alongside similar movements in several European countries.

The movement saw a flourishing of creativity in Ireland across many areas such stained glass, woodwork, bookbinding and illustration, embroidery, ceramics, and metalwork, and many of its most notable creators were women. Some of the women remain well known but many others have not retained the prominence in national memory that they deserve.

Dr Róisín Kennedy’s talk will speak of the Women of the Irish Arts and Crafts Movement. Dr Kennedy is a Lecturer in the School of Art History and Cultural Policy. She is former Yeats Curator at the National Gallery of Ireland and former curator of the State Collection at Dublin Castle.

She is co-editor of Harry Clarke and Artistic Visions of the New Irish State, (Irish Academic Press, 2018), Censoring Art. Silencing the Artwork (I.B. Tauris, 2018) and Sources in Irish Art 2. A Reader, (Cork University Press, 2021) and is editor of the forthcoming Visualizing the Celtic Revival. The Arts and Crafts Movement in Ireland - selected writings by Nicola Gordon Bowe, (Four Courts Press).

Her monograph, Art and the Nation State, Attitudes to Modern Art in Ireland, first published by Liverpool University Press in 2021, has just been reissued as a paperback
