I copied the "Letters from Female Impersonators" section from Vaishnavi Sundar's documentary, Behind the Looking Glass, to present a sample to you here. These 1950s and 60s letters and photos, published in an underground newsletter, Nutrix, are considered by the TQIAA+ crowd to be significant historical documentation of "trans identity." As if the man alone in his rented room, in underwear and accessories cadged from a female neighbor, strutting in front of a mirror, is the first stage of "stunning and brave" identification. Many of these men were married and kept these expensive and time-consuming hobbies completely secret. Their words show the "mommy issues" and the dismissive attitudes as well as the superficial images the men called "womanhood." I applaud Vaishnavi Sundar for every scene, every edit and every soundtrack in Behind the Looking Glass. It has lived up to all of my expectations, all of my hopes.
