Clipping little kitten claws is a task and a half!

There are a number of tricks you can employ to make it easier to trim those pointy little kitty claws. Cat claws are an important part being a cat for physiological and emotional reasons, and it's vital to keep your cats claws intact! Starting your kittens on a clipping regiment when they are young will make clipping your cat's nails an easy and enjoyable process throughout their life with you.

When kittens are small, their nails are small and extra pointy, so we like to clip them partly to keep them from sticking to clothing and furniture (and skin! ouch!) like velcro! It's also super helpful for getting them use to the process so that you can handle their paws and claws when they're older and have them enjoy the attention rather than be worried about why on earth the silly humans are touching their paws :)

We've clipped kittens as young as 4-5 weeks. Kittens younger than that are SO tiny, and their nails are SO small, and when they're much younger they can't even retract their claws yet.

First, it helps to have a kitten who's familiar with you and used to being touched, especially on their paws. So if you have a kitten and you plan to cut his nails (which I definitely recommend! Do NOT declaw your sweet furbaby!), the while you're cuddling him, give his little toe-beans a gentle squeeze and practice extending his claws. That way, he'll be used to it when it comes time to give them a snip.

If you're not sure how your kitty is going to react, or if he's in an especially energetic mood, it can help a lot to wrap them gently in a towel (I discuss that in this trimming video, and I show it in several others), and just pull out the one paw at a time. Then, extend their little claws, just like you practiced, and clip away! I always take off JUST THE TIP when clipping kitten and cat nails, because I want it to be an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. And the more they enjoy it, the less the mind doing it more frequently anyway - so each kitten pedicure session goes faster!

I hope you find this video about trimming your kitten's claws helpful, and I hope you have a great experience clipping your kitten's nails! It can be intimidating at first but once you get the hang of it, you'll never think twice about giving their claws a quick cut.
