Elf the musical: went in totally blind and grumpy, don’t know the movie, and came out a believer. Who knew a guy in green tights could have that much power? @greyhenson is that cousin at Thanksgiving and Christmas who somehow keeps Uncle Bob from talking politics, walks into your family drama, cracks a joke, and suddenly everyone’s passing mashed potatoes instead of opinions. Forget a turkey, we need Grey Henson at the table, passing out jokes like dinner rolls and turning passive-aggressive comments into sing-alongs. Oh, Grandpa Joe thinks your electric car is ruining America? Perfect…let’s wrap that opinion in tinsel, hang it on the tree, and turn it into a tap-dancing number with jazz hands and glitter powered by Christmas spirit.
There’s Sean Astin as Santa, making his Broadway debut, he went from carrying Frodo up Mount Doom to carrying a sack full of toys and flying a sleigh over the audience. And, of course, there’s a Lord of the Rings joke in show. I mean, you cast Samwise Gamgee as Santa, you have to go there…It’s an unwritten rule of theater.
And Kayla Davion. She’s got these pipes that could make a Grinch burst into tears. Her voice was so good, I almost expected the elves to start rolling down the stage like it was Proud Mary.
In the end, this show made me believe…in Christmas, Broadway, maybe even the human spirit. It’s fun, it’s festive, it’s hilarious and it’s New York. And when you think Christmas, you think New York City. Where else could you see a musical about a giant elf and leave feeling like your heart grew three sizes. That’s Broadway magic.
