I’m a dry cleaner, and this video is for fashion designers, developers, and anyone in the garment industry who wants feedback from a luxury cleaner on what makes clothing a nightmare, or a dream, to care for.
1) Trim and hardware! Can it be removed or covered? Will the finish rub off? Will it scratch everything else in the wash? Leather patches and chunky metal hardware are the biggest culprits. (I’m still claiming credit for Loewe switching from brown-on-white patches to black-on-black.)
2) Pleats are never going to look new. Cotton and silk pleats soften over time, and repleating them is almost extinct work. Polyester holds better, which explains Issey Miyake’s obsession.
3) No surprise here but buttons love to break. Please think about how unique your button design and materials are. For example, mother of pearl is very fragile.
4) I cannot wait for the dirty, stained, and wrinkled looks to end. A near impossible task for us. I recently had to restain a client's jorts because they were 'too clean'.
If you’re studying fashion, spend a few days inside a cleaner. You’ll see what really survives the test of time and what becomes an instant headache for us and the client.
The longer a garment lasts, the less waste we make. Design for care and longevity, PLEASE!
