When you get a tattoo, the process involves using a needle to inject ink into the deeper layer of your skin, called the dermis. This layer holds the ink more permanently than the outer layer of skin, so the tattoo won’t fade as skin cells naturally fall off. As the needle pierces your skin, your immune system reacts by sending special cells to the area to try to remove the ink particles, which it recognizes as foreign. However, most of the ink particles are too large for these cells to carry away, so the ink stays in place and the design remains visible. After the tattoo is done, your body begins the healing process, which causes some redness, swelling, and the formation of a scab to protect the area. Over time, exposure to sunlight and natural cell turnover can cause tattoos to fade slightly, but with proper care, a tattoo can stay vibrant for many years.
