Leland Gagnebin was born and grew up in northern Illinois and was drafted into the Army in January 1969 at the age of 21. He was sent to Vietnam in July of that year and was assigned to the air cavalry platoon attached to the headquarters of the 3rd Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division. His unit carried out an assortment of missions in the northern part of South Vietnam over the next year, sometimes conducting patrols of their own and often assisting units in trouble as a sort of rapid reaction force. He spent time on several firebases, including Ripcord during the time when it was under siege in July 1970. This part of his interview covers his early life, training and part of his tour in Vietnam.
