At least ten people have died and dozens have been injured after a vehicle crashed into crowds of revellers in the early hours of New Year’s Day in New Orleans.

The vehicle reportedly crashed into a large crowd gathered in Bourbon Street in the French Quarter — a popular tourist destination in the Louisiana city.

Witnesses said the driver then got out and started firing a weapon. According to some accounts he was wearing body armour and was in possession of an assault rifle.

A mass casualty incident has been declared and the area has been cordoned off, with a large police presence at the scene.
