Before nylon, stockings were made of other woven cloths, such as linen, cotton, silk, or wool, and worn by women for warmth. Hosiery and other foot coverings were also popular among ancient Greeks and Romans.

It may seem surprising but when the first knitting machine was invented, hosiery was only worn by men. Around the '20s, women began to wear stockings to cover their exposed legs because the hemlines of their dresses were too short. Around this time rayon or silk was used in the production of these accessories and a garter belt was used to hold them up. The first nylon stockings appeared around 1940 when Du Pont, a chemical company, introduced nylon and started making products of this synthetic fiber.
