King Florestan XIV and his Queen have arranged a splendid event to celebrate the birth of their newborn daughter, the Princess Aurora. The celebration begins with villagers dancing with garlands of flowers to welcome the new princess. The villagers then have a vision of the grown Aurora as she matures and prepares to rule their kingdom.

Back at the birthday celebration, the six good fairies arrive and each bestow Aurora with different traits, including generosity, kindness, and beauty. The Lilac Fairy, the most powerful fairy in the land, is godmother to Princess Aurora. After the fairies present their gifts, the evil fairy Carabosse arrives, upset at her lack of invitation to the party. The Queen begs for forgiveness and proclaims that the blame should be placed on the party’s organizer rather than herself. Carabosse refuses and declares her plan to curse the child.

The good fairies beg Carabosse not to harm the princess, but she proceeds to place an evil curse upon the baby. She declares that Aurora will grow up to be the most beautiful and enchanting of princesses. However, by her sixteenth birthday, she will prick her finger and fall into a deep slumber, from which she will only awaken by the touch of true love.

After the pandemonium of the curse, village life continues as normal, with the exception of all sharp objects being banned from the kingdom. On her sixteenth birthday, Aurora celebrates with four princesses of distant kingdoms, who each present her with a rose. However, at the end of the festival, she looks closely at one of the roses and picks her finger upon its thorn, quickly falling unconscious.

While asleep, different characters fill Aurora’s dreams, such as Puss in Boots, a bluebird, and Red Riding Hood. After 100 years of slumber, Prince Desiré stumbles upon the kingdom. He is enchanted by the beautiful princess and rushes to wake her. Upon his touch, Aurora awakens and celebrates her new love with the kingdom.
