Roberto Cavalli's golden purple brocade runway and stunning set, which evoked a Renaissance villa with its four-poster bed blanketed in spotted fur and surrounded by carved elephants, could only hint at the extravagant excesses to come.

He wore intricately seamed second-skin leggings, doublets from a "Bronzino" image, and pirate shirts in brocade print chiffons for the Cavalli women' brief daylight moments.

Furs ranged from extravagant to much more ridiculous, a traditional pony trench was overprinted with zebra stripes, and the season's truncated bolero form was punctured with crystal-bordered cuts.
