A solenoid valve is an electromechanically operated valve. The valve is controlled by an electric current through a solenoid. Solenoids operate using an electromagnetic solenoid coil to change the state of a valve from open to closed, or vice-versa. If the solenoid valve is ‘normally closed’, when the coil is energized, the valve gets lifted open by the electromagnetic force produced by the coil.

A solenoid valve has two main parts: the solenoid and the valve. The solenoid converts electrical energy into mechanical energy which, in turn, opens or closes the valve mechanically. Solenoid valves are used to control the rate of flow in fluid and air powered tools, systems, and motors. Washing machines and gas boilers use these valves, as well as hydraulic pumps. Solenoid valves can be customized to suit specific needs and can be utilized to control a variety of mediums such as air, electricity, gas, steam, and oil.
