An infection of the skin around the hands or toes is called paronychia. The infected area may be swollen, red, and painful. Sometimes pus-filled blisters also form. Most of the time, paronychia is not a major problem and can be treated at home. In very rare cases, this infection can occur in the remaining toe of the hand or foot. Acute paronychia- usually appears suddenly. Suddenly it is felt that the finger has swollen and it starts hurting. It can occur in any toe of the hand or foot. The area around the nail is red, painful, especially after an injury to that area. Chronic paronychia – This is an infection that is slowly progressing, causing slight inflammation. In this also, pain and redness arise on the skin around the finger. Acute paronychia gets better in 5 to 10 days with proper therapy. Chronic paronychia requires several weeks of treatment with antifungal medications. Paronychia can return even after proper healing if you re-injure the skin, or forget to keep the nail area dry.

हाथ या पैर की अंगुली के आस-पास की त्वचा के संक्रमण को परओनिकिया कहते हैं। संक्रमित क्षेत्र सूजा, लाल और दर्द वाला हो सकता है। कभी-कभी पीप से भरा फफोला भी हो जाता है। अधिकतर समय, परओनिकिया बड़ी समस्या नहीं होती और इसका उपचार घर पर ही किया जा सकता है। बहुत दुर्लभ मामलों में ही यह संक्रमण हाथ या पैर की बची हुई अंगुली में हो सकता है। एक्यूट परओनिकिया-आमतौर पर यह एकाएक दिखाई देता है। अचानक महसूस होता है कि उंगली में सूजन आ गई है और वह दर्द करने लगी है। यह हाथ या पैर की किसी भी अंगुली में हो सकता है। नाखून के आसपास का क्षेत्र लाल, दर्द से भरा हुआ होता है, खासकर उस क्षेत्र में चोट के बाद ऐसा होता है। क्रोनिक परओनिकिया– यह ऐसा संक्रमण है जो धीरे-धीरे बढ़ने वाला, थोड़ी-थोड़ी सूजन उत्पन्न करने वाला होता है। इसमें भी अंगुली के आस-पास की त्वचा पर पीड़ा और लालिमा उत्पन्न हो जाती है। उचित चिकित्सा के साथ एक्यूट परओनिकिया 5 से 10 दिनों में ठीक हो जाता है। क्रोनिक परओनिकिया को फफूंद रोधी दवाओं के कई सप्ताह तक उपचार की जरूरत होती है। उचित चिकित्सा के बाद भी परओनिकिया लौट सकता है यदि आप त्वचा को फिर से चोटग्रस्त कर लेते हैं, या नाखून के क्षेत्र को शुष्क रखना भूल जाते हैं।
